On March 1st, 2010, my friend Walter and I set off on an adventure with my Arabian horse, Sojourner. I rode Soj across America and Walter drove our little truck (with no trailer). The trip began in Los Angeles, California and successfully ended in Bath, New Hampshire 8 months and 14 days later. It was a 3,700 mile ride.

We rode in celebration of family and as an outreach to those dealing with divorce-related depression.

This ride tells a tale of love in many forms - through the people we meet along the way, our connection with the horse, with the land, and with each other.

As this blog goes on it gets more and more in depth with tons of photos and experiences. Snuggle in with a cup of tea and read this like a book. I have switched the blog around so it reads start to finish so you don't have to read backward (except the first entry).

Here is our story...

Bye trailer and magic hay. :(

Today we are leaving the warm comforts of Robbie and John's home. Walter was telling me he feels like we've been here a week. We just felt so at home and so comfortable right away. We were here three nights and every night the 5 of us sat around the dining room table for dinner and spent the rest of the evening sipping mint tea and exchanging experiences, jokes, and ideas.

Soj and I are heading on 260 East towards Showlow. Tonight we are going to camp about 25 miles from here...maybe a little less because it is already 9am and Robbie is in the kitchen making crepes which I want to slowly savor. I just moved the computer to the kitchen to be with them and it's not just crepes, but scrambled eggs as well...and juice and coffee. Mmmm...yeah. I'll probably leave closer to 10am.

Soj is ready to go. He's a little pacey this morning. I must pass some different sort of energy to him when we're leaving because he seems to always know. He got a bath for the first time in a while yesterday.
wet little sojy.

I have now moved to the dining room table and John has his paper open reading Jordan an article. Robbie has food sizzling on the stove and Walter is editing photos.

Oh man!!!!!! These crepes are amazing!!!! My mom calls these rolly poly pancakes. My grandma makes amazing rolly poly pancakes too.

It's going to be a beautiful ride today. The sun is shining and the weather is perfect. My stomach is full of good food and I found my chaps.

I thought I had lost my chaps, but the nice mechanic opened up his shop even though it was closed this morning and we found them in the ambulance. I was so bummed. I woke up this morning and thought "where are my chaps?" I had slim hopes that we would find them because we went through absolutely everything yesterday, but lo and behold, they were in the ambulance. I love those chaps because my best friend, Bri, found them in a thrift store and I can remember her bringing them over saying "Jacks! These are perfect!" and she was so excited when they fit so they are not just chaps, but have a little memory attached to them when all of this was still just a dream that I want to keep.

I thought of everyone we've come across as we unpacked and packed yesterday. Every person we have come across has left us a little token to remember them by. We have something from everyone. Memories of little moments with everyone came and went into my head constantly yesterday making me smile.

Robbie and John had some friends stop in last night with homemade baklava. This was perfect because we had just finished eating yellow cake with strawberries and whipped cream. What better to wash that down with but baklava? They were a pleasure to meet...just another example of the wonderful people in this town.

I am going to talk on my recorder today and get some of my thoughts out. These past few days have been full of decision making and problem solving, but so many other things have happened as well that I haven't really touched upon.

Walter just came in and said "all our dishes are clean, it's like we're starting from scratch. It's cool". Robbie said the same thing yesterday. She said "you know, you're just back to plan A again...well, maybe A-...B+, but you're back to the original plan. You, Walter, Soj, and the truck".
It made me feel better when she said that. As long as Jordan feels okay, which he does...he says the mountains here have a good energy and he is looking forward to hiking around in them for a few days. He is sure things will work out and happen as they are supposed to. And as long as Soj has his food, which he does at least for the next month, then I feel good.

I think I will put my boots on my feet and a saddle on Soj and ride a little harder today to make some time. Soj is looking ready to go so I'll just let him trot along as long as he wants. The last few days we have ridden with just a halter and I have been in shorts and flip flops...
Walter said people ask "so...how long has she been riding?" and "does she always ride like that?" when I pull up with my completely naked horse and my bare feet. Maybe I'll snaz it up a bit today and get the cowgirl look going...ride in to town spinning my lasso. Gotta look the part to get the credit, you know? ;) Soj stepped on my flip flops and ripped it so one of them is only half a flip flop anyway...makes for an even better look!

Here we go....off again....

  1. Those boys with you seem really amazing.
I love the pictures as you go through this adventure. The shots are so descriptive; add so much to the text. They are really the "right" shots to accompany what you have written. Maybe a photo should go to Toyota, too!

One of the things you are accomplshing is dispelling the notion of fear that has been planted in our heads over the past few years by the marketplace. Fear sells a lot of items today and you are proving that one does not have to be afraid of dirty hands, a route not taken before, or even of talking to strangers. The marketplace would have us believe that we must be afraid of everybody and everything. It simply is not true.

Take it easy, Pin. And a kiss for the "go-go"...
