On March 1st, 2010, my friend Walter and I set off on an adventure with my Arabian horse, Sojourner. I rode Soj across America and Walter drove our little truck (with no trailer). The trip began in Los Angeles, California and successfully ended in Bath, New Hampshire 8 months and 14 days later. It was a 3,700 mile ride.

We rode in celebration of family and as an outreach to those dealing with divorce-related depression.

This ride tells a tale of love in many forms - through the people we meet along the way, our connection with the horse, with the land, and with each other.

As this blog goes on it gets more and more in depth with tons of photos and experiences. Snuggle in with a cup of tea and read this like a book. I have switched the blog around so it reads start to finish so you don't have to read backward (except the first entry).

Here is our story...

2/20/10

I am feeling a little tired tonight-there is a lot to think about. I want to mainly concentrate on the ride, but there is also this new album that Cait and I have worked so long on and the bass player on the album, Jon, has spent days and days and days mixing and mastering it. So...I want to get it out there!! I am hoping once I am out on the ride and the anticipation of what it's going to be like and any trepidations I might have are put to rest a little then with the help from my family at home we can get the album out.
Anyway-I was just at the ranch and they were raffling off this fantastic little 18 month old buttermilk buckskin horse with amazing blood lines and great papers. He was awesome. He went for $35. Henry could take him and if I were staying I would take that little horse. I really liked him a lot....his color is incredible-he has a black mane his body is....well, buttermilk colored. He was sweet too-he's going to be a really good horse. I was just sitting in the living room talking with my mom about the ride and I found a tick on my face so I am going to go jump in the shower. I HATE ticks.

  1. I'm excited about following your ride. I read about it at The Longriders' Guild.

You and your sister are very talented artists as well. I've enjoyed listening to a few of your songs and I identified with how you describe your grandfather. Such a loving man.

So, I'm looking forward to the trip and I'll post often to cheer you on.

I also hate, hate, hate ticks. I know they have their place and have just as much right to be here as we do, but they're such nasty little buggers.

    Travel Safe!

  2. Hey Jackie! Thank you! I'm so glad you like the music. :)
Yeah-my gradfather was something else. I don't think there has been a day yet where I haven't thought of him and I really don't think there ever will be. I have his St. Christopher on my neck which brings me a lot of comfort and I wear his boots (which are riding boots) when I ride. In fact, just yesterday a friend looked down and said "those are Poppy's boots?" He never met my Pop, but he knew they were his. I like that-it keeps him alive in a way. I see him so often in my uncle and my mom too. I'm sure your grandfather was incredible. They're the best. :)
